The Red Carpet Treatment

I was working for Ray Kildisas, Property Master
at The Mark Taper Forum. We were loading in Tongue of a Bird, which
starred Marian Seldes. Ray had me lay some red carpet and a cushioned kitchen chair
off stage right. He said, "This is for Marian Seldes. Our job is to make
sure she is well taken care of." During the six week run of the play I did just
that, even making her laugh at one point during every show by bowing as I passed by.
I've met a lot of people over my career as a stage hand, but never have
I met a more gracious soul. Patient, kind, quiet, and unassuming, Marian Seldes is
the kind of theatre person I wish I met more often!
