The northeastor windward westside of Maui is the
east side of the west Maui mountains. This area is not well known. Until
recently, the road was unpaved and extremely treacherous from Waihee to Kahakuloa.
The road is now paved all the way, but is still dangerous, and is only one lane much of
the way.
For those willing to risk the slow and tedious drive, the
rewards are fantastic. While most people only look at the huge, vertical cinder
cones that form the spectacular sea cliff coast from their airplanes or from the distance
of the central shore, those who drive right to them will be awed by their massive beauty.
The further you go the more awesome the views of the island of Molokai become! Near Nakalele Point (just north of the blowhole), you can almost get the entire island of Molokai in the frame of a 50mm lens!
